SnoTap Packers Preview: Detroit vs. Green Bay
Green Bay Packers open the season at home against the Detroit Lions. For the first time in a long time, we aren’t talking about the long streak of consecutive wins Green Bay has at Lambeau versus Detroit. That streak was broken last year. In many ways, it’s good for Green Bay that Detroit doesn’t have that extra motivation. Lions are looking for their second consecutive win at Lambeau since 1990-1991.
12:00 pm, Packers are favored by 7.5
Storylines to watch this week.
All eyes on Aaron Rodgers – Everyone will be diagnosing Aaron Rodgers. I hope to Lombardi he gets off to a quick start so the haters calm down or else, it will be a full Packers Twitter meltdown. Detroit is averaging 11.1 yards per completion for the opposing team so Rodgers should have trouble moving the ball. Not to mention, Darius Slay looked really bad to start the year. Keep an eye out for if Green Bay goes his direction.
Can Matthew Stafford do it himself? – Ameer Abdullah went on IR this week with a foot injury. He might not have helped much as Green Bay has the best rush defense through two games. Matthew Stafford will have the weight on his back, and these are the games where he throws four picks because he tries to do too much. Theo Riddick will be big for him. He needs to use Riddick in the flat as much as he can and avoid making the bonehead mistakes.
Injuries R Us – Both teams come into this game a little wounded. Clay Matthews is battling injury, T.J. Lang’s hip is a sudden issue, still no sign of Sam Shields. For the Lions, they have two healthy linebackers practicing this week, and Ziggy Anasah is out with a high ankle sprain. We already mentioned Abdullah on the offensive side of things. This could be a war of attrition for both teams.
What does week 3 look like for Damrious Randall Packers cornerback Damarious Randall had a great Week 1 then a forgettable Week 2. Golden Tate and/or Marvin Jones could probably replicate some of what Diggs did on Sunday. Randall has to be ready for it. If Detroit can be successful, Lions have a real shot at stealing this game. Randall needs to show his Week 1 form. I do wonder if Capers will give him a little more help and present more zone looks in the secondary.
Prediction: I love the Packers in this game. I get what happened last Sunday, but I’m seeing that more as a blip than what the team actually is on offense. Lions are a wounded animal right now especially on defense. Look for Rodgers and Eddie Lacy to take advantage of that in a dominating performance. GB 31-13
