Amid LeBron’s Hate, Giannis Wins Another MVP Award.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is the MVP again for the NBA. This is his second-straight MVP trophy. He is the MVP of Milwaukee sports along with Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers. But Giannis is the guy. If he ends up here for 15 to 20 years, there will be a statue of the Greek Freak at the Deer District. Even though LeBron James threw a complete fit last night about the MVP, it doesn’t matter. It fuels Giannis that there are haters out there on a regular basis, and while people will stick to LeBron like sweaty shirt after a workout, Antetokounmpo doesn’t give a fuck about what you think about him. LeBron does and his insecurity was on full display last night. Giannis will just keep playing basketball.
Antetokounmpo had one of the best regular seasons of all-time. Because it’s 2020 and most of Antetokounmpo’s greatness happened almost a year ago, people forget this. We have memories of ants in the always-on 2020. He had more points per game, more rebounds per game, better from 3, the best defender in the league. Of course, Antetokounmpo was going to win the MVP. When we look back in 20 or 30 years, people will realize that Antetokounmpo had one of the best seasons in NBA history. And most basketball people who did not buy into the narrative of LeBron understood this. The MVP race did not actually exist.
Giannis had a better regular season than LeBron. That is what the award is all about. It is not about what happens in the postseason. Let’s not forget that Dirk Nowitzki won the MVP award finished as the best team in the Western Conference then lost in the first round to Golden State. While Giannis lost in the second round, there is a parallel there. Guys like Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, Amar’e Stoudemire all finished first-team All-NBA and had better postseason than Dirk. It didn’t matter though.
And look part of this is the Giannis vs. LeBron rivalry that is very real. It’s mostly driven by LeBron. Giannis does not bow down to LeBron. He considers Bron is equal and considers himself better than LeBron. That drives James crazy. He has always been the guy. Hell, he still the guy, but there is someone else at his level. At some point, James will accept that, but it will be a few more years before he does anything like that. Giannis hasn’t shown himself yet in the playoffs. That will happen. It is part of the natural progression of an NBA superstar.
Two MVPs, now let’s get a Finals MVP.
