Another Packers WR Target Down as Watkins signs with Chiefs
This is not a good Tuesday morning for Packers fans. I usually say that Tuesday’s are typically worse days than Monday’s for a variety of reasons. It feels like there’s a certain bad juju about them. It appears to be the case for the Green Bay Packers and their fans. Green Bay misses out on Allen Robinson, then a few hours later, Sammy Watkins signs with the Kansas City Chiefs on a three-year 48 million dollar deal with 20 million guaranteed. Packers lose out to another team with a young quarterback looking to build their wide receiving core through free agency. All of the sudden, Kansas City has a host of weapons on their offense.
Watkins ends up making more money than Robinson in the three-year as he gets 16 million per versus Robinson who made 14. You wonder if the Packers’ lack of direction on Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb scared players away. Green Bay not having the cap space at the moment might have thrown some guys off, and even if the Packers are making moves this week to figure that out, these players didn’t want to wait. Robinson and Watkins both liked the deals put on the table to them, therefore, they’re going to take what’s out there. Hopefully, this is a learning experience for Brian Gutekunst about having all of his ducks in a row by the time of free agency.
Watkins will add to the Kansas City offense in a dynamic fashion. Just like I thought Mike McCarthy could get a ton out of him, Andy Reid can definitely do something similar. Watkins did a lot of sets with Cooper Kupp last season, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Kansas City does a bunch of stuff similar with Tyreek Hill instead along with Watkins.
We’ll see if more free agents find homes that aren’t Green Bay.
