BuckyCap: Badgers Blasted in Brooklyn
Wisconsin Badgers basketball and New York City do not mix recently. Badgers suffered a bad loss to Rutgers a few years ago at Madison Square Garden in one of their worst offensive games ever. Wisconsin also lost at the Garden at the buzzer. They likely hoped things would be different when they faced off against Richmond at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The answer would be no. Wisconsin lost 62-52 to Richmond in a tough loss for the Badgers. They’ve now lost two games this year against high-level mid-major programs. These are supposed to be resume builders, but instead, they’re hurting Wisconsin’s profile.
Player of the Game: Garrett Golden – The Richmond forward was hard to stop on Monday. He went off for 16 points and 12 rebounds in a Spiders win. Golden is a big body inside who cannot be stopped in the paint. He is exactly the type of player that can give Wisconsin fits right now with their lack of size inside. Nathan Reuvers is not bulky enough to handle a player like Golden.
Honorable Mention: Nathan Reuvers – At least Wisconsin did get another good game from Reuvers who played well on Monday night. The Badgers big man had 17 points, seven boards with one three-pointer. He was the scoring difference for this team tonight. Reuvers kept the Badgers in this basketball game the best he could as he one of the only double-digit scorers in this game.
One Thing To Watch: Three-point love affair – Wisconsin found themselves hot from three in the first few games of the season. They could not miss from deep in the second half against Marquette and most of the Green Bay game. That led to fools’ gold. Wisconsin got into one of their old habits of relying on the three-point shot versus taking it straight to the lane. They shot 27 threes all game and only made seven.
Another Thing to Watch: Turnovers became an issue – Badgers are not a team that turns the ball over. But last night, they had 15 of them which is extremely uncharacteristic for Wisconsin. You do not see Wisconsin being this lazy with the basketball. Brad Davison and others did not seem locked into this one.
Next up: Wisconsin will play in the consolation game against New Mexico. They will attempt to salvage a victory against the Lobos who were destroyed by Auburn on Monday night. Lobos like to play fast, so, this will be a contrasting style matchup. Wisconsin needs to come away with one victory.
