College Football Dragged Its Feet & Now They’re in Panic Mode
In mid May, I wrote a post for SnoTapWI that college football needed a commissioner. I said this is a one-time thing for 2020 and both football and basketball needed it. NCAA didn’t listen to me. This cost them dearly. Now, the NCAA is playing catch-up and trying to save their season. Will it work? I’m unsure. But this could have been easily figured out back in May yet the college administrators and NCAA failed on every level. How they did not start to work on a unified plan around the time that baseball and basketball are beyond me. Now they’re trying to figure out last second.
College football will not begin on Labor Day. It is more likely they’ll play on September 19th or October 3rd. Those are the two dates that I believe college football will look at. The Power 5 conferences came together and created a unified testing program. They have rules in place about quarantining if you come in contact with a COVID positive person. This would include face-to-face contact in practice. Teams are likely going to need to change their practice regime. Like we have seen with other sports, they are going to need to make adjustments to everything. But imagine if they had these rules in place in June? Things would be moving much more smoothly and things could have stayed close to how it was supposed to be in 2020.
Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated wants to blame the federal government for college football not happening. While it’s fun to dunk on the orange man, that’s absolute horseshit. The states made the decisions to loosen up without mask mandates. None of these decisions came from the top. Trump is not the reason for all of the things going wrong with college football. What could have Trump done differently? Many things went wrong in June that have led us to why we’re having problems now. People are to blame, not the orange man, despite that is a fun topic that everyone likes to use.
Is college football fucked? Most likely. The fact this is being figured out now versus June is pathetic. They should be embarrassed that this didn’t happen earlier in the year. Maybe with the eight-week window, they’ll figure it out and have college football this season. But it’s feeling more unlikely by the day.
