Could Wes Welker Join the Packers Staff?
Green Bay Packers are not done with their coaching search as Matt LaFleur works on adding coachees. He also still need a special teams coordinator and a wide receiver coach. At some point soon, you’d imagine that both jobs are filled and you can move on to other parts of being a head coach. But for now, LaFleur continues to build his staff. Reports came out yesterday that the Packers and San Francisco 49ers are interviewing Wes Welker for an assistant. I love this move from Green Bay if the team can convince Welker to spend a few months in Green Bay.
It doesn’t seem like Welker would be the receivers coach, rather, an assistant helping out the offense. Either way, I’m fine with the addition of the former Patriots receiver to the staff. He fits the mold of what the Packers are looking for when it comes to coaches. Around the 35-40 year old range with a dash of experience seems to be the sweet spot for the team. Welker is 37 years young and freshly removed out of the league. By all accounts, he was a great teammate and a good friend when playing in the National Football League.
I’m not sure if Welker will take the job unless it’s a position coach offer. He lives in Houston and could go to either San Francisco or Green Bay. I get the Packers have an aura about them plus the chance to do something special, but San Francisco is pretty cool from a living standpoint. Far more expensive than Green Bay though. Another thing to factor in about the Niners is Jimmy Garoppolo. Even though they never played together, Welker could work with Garoppolo providing on insight on things Tom Brady does in games.
We’ll see where the former slot maven ends up.
