David Fizdale’s Firing Draws Excitement for Bucks Fans
On Monday afternoon, the Memphis Grizzlies shocked the NBA world by firing David Fizdale. The coach, who got Memphis to the playoffs with James Ennis and Vince Carter in the starting lineup, finds himself looking for a new job. This comes on the heels of Fizdale benching star player Marc Gasol in the fourth quarter of a Sunday home loss to Brooklyn. Grizzlies chose their star player over their coach. Now, Fizdale is extremely well-respected in the industry as a coach and defensive mind, so, it’s not surprising that Bucks fans drew giddy with excitement. While I put out my own thirst tweet, the base needs to settle down a little bit.
Fizdale is not replacing Jason Kidd as head coach in the middle of the season. Let’s just call that out now. If it happens, I’ll be shocked and amazed. They are not going to make a fundamental shift halfway through the season. If they fire Kidd, which most hope they do, Milwaukee will have an interim coach that isn’t Fizdale. But this makes the microscope on Kidd get even smaller because people will look for more reasons to fire him with an attainable head coach on the market.
Even though LeBron James and Dwyane Wade showed their support on Monday, let’s be careful here with Fizdale as a head coach. Sure, he’s talented as all hell, but is it a little concerning that he had major issues with Gasol? The reports were the two bumped heads countless times. It could be a Gasol thing, but we haven’t seen him really have the reputation of being difficult to work with before this incident. More from this story will come out in the next few days, so, we’ll see if any new details emerge. Fizdale is well-liked in the media which means they’ll spin it positively towards him. Grass always seems greener on the other side, but you never know.
Fizdale or not, Milwaukee is in a must-win tonight against Sacramento. It’s not really a must-win, but it would be nice if they took care of a business against a team who has no business beating them.
