Do the Packers Have a Pat Fitzgerald Obsession?
Obsession is a strong word. But it feels like that’s what we’re seeing with the Packers and Pat Fitzgerald. On Monday after Northwestern came back from a 20-3 deficit, Fitzgerald basically laid it out clearly that he would not be interviewing for the Green Bay Packers head coaching job. Still, reports came out on Monday that the Packers would still like to talk to him. Fitzgerald told the Packers no through the media, yet, they still want to chat with him about the head coaching position. What does this obsession mean for the coaching search, and what does this tell us about Mark Murphy.
Murphy wants to give his guy a chance to interview for the job. That’s where this whole thing starts and maybe ends. It almost feels like the random friend coming to a party with your group of friends even if your friend isn’t interested yet you’re telling everyone at the party how cool he is. It’s almost like Murphy wants to recruit him to the Packers and knows that he will do well in the interview that give Brian Gutekunst. That seems fucking weird, right? Packers are interviewing guys all over the map who all have interest in becoming the next Packers head coach. Fitzgerald does not want to be. What’s so hard for Murphy to understand?
The obsession seems like this is Murphy’s guy, and that was his original pick to be the Packers coach. Gutekunst may have Josh McDaniels or someone else. I’m sure Fitz appreciates Murphy’s desire to have him be an NFL coach, but he doesn’t want to do it. What’s so hard for him to understand? The other thing too is the Northwestern coach isn’t a geezer. He is a young guy. There’s a chance he could be an NFL coach later in his life. Also, what if he wants to Notre Dame’s football coach which could open up if Brian Kelly leaves for the NFL.
To show this obsession is only Murphy-Fitzgerald based, there are no other college coaches on Green Bay’s radar. Lincoln Riley was only something created by media types. Kliff Kingsbury isn’t interviewing with Green Bay. Kelly is not part of the mix either. So what makes Fitzgerald different? Murphy’s connection. That’s absolutely it.
Fitz will not be the Packers coach, but Murphy will try like fucking hell to make it happen.
