Green Bay or Bust: McDaniels Heads Back to Patriots
Josh McDaniels had a plan. It was one of those plans where you think it out in your head before it actually happens to you. It sounds good in your head and know that’s what you want to do with life. McDaniels planned to be the Green Bay Packers head coach. He knew the job had some interest for him, and Brian Gutekunst, the Packers General Manager, McDaniels knew a little bit. We haven’t heard anything about his interview, but he didn’t get the job. Instead, Matt LaFleur did and he’s the new coach of the Packers. McDaniels heads back to New England where he might become the coach-in-waiting for the Patriots.
There are some who are crestfallen that McDaniels isn’t the coach of the Packers. I get it, but at the same time, I wonder what the difference is in with these guys. Packers interviewed 12 coaching candidates, so, they saw what a good interview looked like versus a bad one. There is no rumor about how McDaniels did, but my assumption is he did not have the same presentation about the offense like LaFleur, or after talking with him, the fit wouldn’t be right. That happens all of the time with job interviews.
With McDaniels heading back to New England, I wonder if he’s taking the Patriots job in the next couple years. Bill Belichick feels like retirement is right around the corner for him and when he steps down, McDaniels will be waiting as the new head coach.
