If the Price is Right, Dez Bryant Should Be a Packer
Just picture the Green Bay Packers in the red zone on opening night against the Minnesota Vikings. They are in a four-wide set with Aaron Jones in the backfield with Randall Cobb and Jimmy Graham in the slot. Then on the perimeter, you have Davante Adams and Dez Bryant. Please tell me how you stop that team. It’s a Madden-like team. The offense suddenly becomes damn near unstoppable when you come close to the goal line that it would almost be a fucking crime if you kicked a field goal. If the money makes sense, the Packers should 100 percent make a move to sign Bryant. Worry about the drama and baggage at a later date.
Look, I know there are some who might think the best years of Bryant passed him by. He struggled in the last two years, but I think we’ve seen the difference of him playing with a quarterback like Tony Romo compared to Dak Prescott. Comparing the numbers from Romo to Prescott are dramatic for Dez. It’s clear that he would benefit from a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers. Bryant’s style is one that can stretch the field and become a matchup nightmare in jumpball situations. Sure, he complains about not getting the ball, but wouldn’t you if the quarterback keeps checking down to the likes of Cole Beasley and Jason Witten? This guy would love the idea of playing with Rodgers.
Packers taking a risk like this might be unprecedented in the last few years, but this isn’t Ted Thompson’s team anymore. If Ted were the GM, we would not even sniff the idea of Bryant. It might be a nice thought from a fans’ perspective, yet no way would it come to fruition. Brian Gutekunst made a pledge to look at every option. This would qualify as an option for the team. They decided Jordan Matthews wasn’t a solve, and a part of me believes they want to draft a receiver high, although, not have him play a significant role this season.
Those who are worried about him being another Martellus Bennett. Fucking stop. Those who will point to why sign Dez versus keeping Jordy Nelson. Please realize that Jordy is completely washed and older than Dez by a long haul. He’s a character, sure, but there’s nothing wrong with adding some personality to this roster. Green Bay’s fanbase expects these guys to be robots, but the fact is they can have opinions too. Dez isn’t that bad by the grand scheme of things. Don’t let the media get in your head.
