Lady Liberty Stays on Hockey Masks After IOC Backs Down
USA! USA! USA! U.S. Women’s Hockey will have their second game against Russia happening pretty soon, and we nearly had our first ‘American’ controversy in the Winter Olympics. IOC mentioned to the United States’ team that they needed to remove Lady Liberty from the goalie masks. After catching a ton of heat for what an egregious misstep this would be, the IOC quivered and said it could remain on the masks. Good to see we can still go America on everyone’s asses from time to time.
This isn’t some MAGA post honestly, rather, it’s a call that all countries should be able to represent what makes the fabric of their nation. Lady Liberty is a sign of freedom, opportunity and America itself. It’s not something where people are banging their chests about America. It’s not a divisive symbol. It’s not meant to offend or trigger anyone who may see it on the screen. Lady Liberty is probably the most gentle American symbol that a person could show off on a hockey mask.
Go America, do us all proud. I’m excited for both men and women’s hockey in the coming weeks. Olympic hockey is fantastic to watch.
