Making Sense of the Steve Wojciechowski Extension
Marquette Golden Eagles extended Steve Wojciechowski for two more years yesterday. A move that is not exactly popular for the fanbase. Wojo did not bring himself into the good graces of the fanbase when they lost six of their last seven games and received an embarrassing loss to Murray State. To add the cherry on this shit sundae, Joey and Sam Hauser left the program a few weeks after this debacle. No type of extension felt warranted for the Marquette coach. But there is an underlying reason about why they needed to do this… to make sure that they could bring in top talent for the 2020 recruiting class and have none of the players worry about Wojcicehowski’s job security.
Marquette has four open spots in the 2020 recruiting class. They could have more pending on what they do with the two other more spots open for this year. Wojciechowski’s contract only keeps him here for the second year of those 2020 recruits then time’s up for him. With Marquette tacking on the extra two years, these potential players will not have a worry that this coaching staff will be gone before their four years is up. It is a tactical move. On the surface, it might feel dumb and be unpopular, but when you get into the guts of things, it makes a ton of sense. Marquette fans will have to swallow this pill, even though, it feels like something you would give a horse.
While I’m not Wojo’s bigggest fan, I want Marquette to do what’s the best thing possible to push this university forward. If they believe that Wojciechowski can mold and create a deep 2020 recruiting class then I’m here for it. If Wojo’s buyout number becomes something that becomes easy to handle if they need to fire him earlier than 2024 then I’m good with it. This could mean it is easier for him to leave the university, but that is not a concern at the moment. The university is taking on some risk dealing with an angry fan base and likely upset boosters, but if they have the messaging down internally, this will be okay.
My hope is for Wojciechowski is that he learns from his mistakes of last season and what prompted the Hauser brothers to leave the program. He had a good thing going for this team halfway through the season at 23-4 then it all went to hell and a hand basket. He needs to do some self-reflection on why that happened on how to avoid it again. I do think this Marquette team wants redemption, but the Big East is much tougher this season. If Marquette falters again, the university will have another tough decision on their hands.
