Markus Howard Returning Gives Marquette a Boost
Markus Howard decided to return to Marquette yesterday. Howard announced in late morning that he will be back at Marquette for his senior year. Howard calls it unfinished business. As mentioned earlier this week, the hype around Marquette will be crazy. This team will be ranked in the preseason top 10 to start the year, and how they handle that will be a major question. Steve Wojciechowski is firmly on the hot seat with this team as well. Golden Eagles bring back almost all of their scorers from last year and add a couple more guards to help out Howard. Marquette could be a force.
After the debacle against Murray State, I wrote that Howard should take notes from Ja Morant about how to play the point guard position at a smaller size. He isn’t as quick as Morant, but there are still some lessons there. Same goes for Trae Young. I think that would be the guy for Howard to model his game after in attempt to be a first round draft pick in the NBA. With the guards coming in next year, Markus will not have to be the primary ballhander on a regular basis letting him run off screens and find different pockets within the defense. He can a big shot hunter in the best way possible.
The guard depth coming in to help out the Golden Eagles also carries a bit of pressure. Koby McEwen is a transfer from Utah State, and Greg Elliott comes back from an injury. Those two guys right there are going to help out significantly. We know Elliott’s game. He showed flashes his freshman year and proved the defense was fantastic. McEwen is an impressive looking point guard at 6’4 and can bully people into the lane. There were some turnover issues with him which should give Marquette fans a slight pause, but that could be immaturity. McEwen and Elliott will definitely make this team better.
Can we start the season tomorrow? This is an awesome way to begin the offseason.
