Marquette Lays What Should Be The Final Egg in Steve Wojciechowski’s Career

Marquette Golden Eagles had some buzz around them to start the Big East Tournament. They won three of their last four games. The window of making some noise busted open with Villanova’s injury issues. All they had to do was beat Georgetown. Now, the Hoyas have been playing better of late, but still, they’re a beatable opponent. Instead, Marquette came out flatter than flat and scored 14 points in the first half against one of the worst defenses in the Big East. As has been the case for the duration of Wojo, Marquette could not keep the momentum going. There’s no reason he should be coming back next season.
Marquette is at the lowest point of their basketball history in a long time. That might sound dramatic but it’s true. The luster of Marquette is starting to wear off. They’ve never been a program that is near the bottom of the barrel routinely in the league. And the problem is with Wojciechowski and his staff, they seem fine with being a mediocre program. They’ve almost accepted it instead of trying to adapt. The fact Marquette cannot figure out defense still is depressing in its own right. It’s been seven years and not one of those defenses has been good.
It is one thing for Marquette to lose yesterday by single digits. Maybe Georgetown hits a big three late and Marquette doesn’t, they lose 65-60. We can note that they went down fighting and gave it their best effort with something to look forward to next year. Instead, it’s a blowout that we saw far too often next season. How can anyone be excited about another year of Wojciechowski? Even if the young talent decides to come back, is anyone buying stock that this will be different for Marquette?
Marquette can bring back Wojo, but the fact remains that everyone in the fan base feels apathetic about him and the team. It’s going to take a lot for people to buy back in. Do you think people are budgeting to see Marquette play regularly? No, they’ll go to the Milwaukee Brewers or Milwaukee Bucks games, they have more of a pulse. The only way to sell Wojo for next year is a completely revamped staff with less ‘Yes’ men and more idea guys.
We’ll see what the Golden Eagles do this offseason.
