Marquette Makes A Surprising Move To Fire Steve Wojciechowski

Marquette Golden Eagles know how to news dump. With the NCAA Tournament kicking off, they decided to relieve Steve Wojciechowski of his duties. The headline says ‘surprise’, and the surprise isn’t the fact that it was warranted. Rather, a ‘surprise’ because we heard how much the administration liked him plus Marquette’s significant financial issues. None of that mattered though. It is likely they heard from their boosers and fans, and the apathetic nature towards the program likely did the trick.
Marquette Golden Eagles aren’t a blue blood, but they are a program with a rich basketball tradition. And when Wojo has been one of the worst coaches in history, a move has to be made. With how Marquette performed this year, it would have been an extremely hard sell to bring the fans back in whether it’s from season tickets or the students. Marquette had the talent to be a tournament team but disappointed after a great start that included wins against Wisconsin and Creighton. Marquette could not defend bringing him back without significant changes to his coaching staff. After Marquette lost one of their top recruiters to a head coaching job in Albany, it seemed harder to make that happen.
Now, Marquette will hit the reset button. And this will be a big decision by the university. Stay tuned for another post about who Marquette might look for in a head coach. This will be a big decision though. Buzz Williams left the cupboard bare, and this time if the new coach can convince some of the recruits to stay, Marquette can have a quick revival. But that’s a tall task in today’s college basketball. The transfer portal is the hot thing to do. But the right coach might be able to get it done.
Let’s go, Marquette.
