McCarthy Wants Packers To Spend More Time in Wisconsin
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy sounded like a college coach as mini-camp wrapped up yesterday. He voiced his opinion that more players should spend the summer up in Green Bay and when asked why, he said ‘There’s no better place in the summertime than Green Bay, Wisconsin.’ I would like to amend Mike’s quote to ‘Wisconsin’ and cut off Green Bay. If this becomes a plan of the Packers, they’re going to have to put their money where their mouth is and build a facility in Milwaukee to keep the players here. Yes, it’s not Green Bay, but it’s close enough and it provides a great option for the players.
Milwaukee is booming right now. There are buildings and new apartments that go up each day. The Bucks new arena and that district made an effort to keep their players close by with housing options and a workout facility. Packers should attempt to do the same somewhere close to the Milwaukee area. Build a state-of-the-art workout facility with luxury apartments close by to entice players on staying around the city for the summer. It’s close enough to Green Bay where these guys could keep the property during the season. It’s a sound idea that would keep players here and would drive some additional business to Milwaukee. If I’m the city, I’m providing that ask to Green Bay today.
You wonder about the more established players with families, and that might be a challenge. It’s hard to say these players should have multiple houses in the State of Wisconsin. It’s just not that easy. But McCarthy’s point was more about those athletes without kids, whether they’re single or married. I’d love to see a chart of what Packers players do in the month of summer prior to training camp. I’m sure it’s all over the place with travel, working out, etc.
McCarthy is right, but the Packers might need to figure what the players wants/needs are to make it happen.
