Myles Powell, not Markus Howard, Gets Top Big East Honors

When Marquette came to the Big East originally, they had some established rivalries. Louisville and Cincinnati came over from the Great Midwest COnference where Marquette had a history with both of these teams. When Louisville and Cincinnati bolted for football-focused conferences, Marquette had to look elsewhere for rivals. There is one with Villanova as they’re the kings of the conference but there’s not much hatred. But when it comes to Seton Hall, the rivalry is very real. Another Molotov cocktail had been thrown on the rivalry fire today when Myles Powell was named preseason Big East Player of the Year.
Howard and Powell are the two best players in the Big East yet Powell does not have the same numbers as Howard. It’s a complete joke that he received the early honors compared to Howard considering the accolades the Marquette point guard has received nationally. Many critics will say Howard is just a shooter. But that’s crazy to me. Is Steph Curry just a shooter? What about Trae Young? He does more on the court and I truly believe we’ll see him grow as a more well-rounded player this season. Powell is not much different. He’s a chucker. He has a worse shooting percentage than Howard and worse overall numbers yet he’s the Big East preseason POY. OKAY!
Marquette Golden Eagles head into an interesting season in 2019-2020. At the end of the 2019 season when Virginia raised the arms as champions, college basketball content creators saw the hype for the upcoming Marquette season. People had the Golden Eagles as high as number four for the upcoming season. That all changed when Joey and Sam Hauser decided to transfer from Marquette. I love the comparison to Purdue last season when Carsen Edwards was the man with a decent supporting cast. If they have Purdue’s season minus a last-second Elite Eight buzzer-beater loss, sign me the fuck up.
Powell vs. Howard this season is must-see television. Both games are on Saturday afternoon. Once in mid-January at South Orange, the other on Senior Day at the Fiserv Forum. That might be a must-go for Marquette fans.
