Oren Burks’ Injury Creates a Significant Void In Packers D
Green Bay Packers are dealing with their first major injury of the year. Oren Burks, the starting middle linebacker, went down with a torn pectoral muscle in the game against Houston. On Saturday, Green Bay thought that Burks would be out for the year, but he is getting a second opinion today. There is a chance he may be placed on injured reserve with the ability to return after Week 8 of the season. Regardless of what they hear today, Packers losing Burks means that others will need to step up at middle linebacker.
If there was one area of the team where Green Bay could not really afford a major injury, it was middle linebacker. It is frustrating how that always seems to happen in sports. The one place where the injuries cannot happen, they find they’re losing a key player. Burks had a great offseason and seemed like could have a breakout year at the linebacker position. It is disappointing that he will be saddled with another injury in his young career. Green Bay does not have anyone on the roster with the athleticism at middle linebacker that Burks possesses which could create issues at middle linebacker.
This does mean Ty Summers and Curtis Bolton have a chance to step up for the team. Summers had a great preseason Game 1 with 10 tackles against the Houston Texans. Summers is not the quickest guy and does have shades of Jake Ryan where he can tackle and make plays right at him yet he cannot move across the field enough. Bolton is an undrafted rookie who is having a good camp thus far. He is raw with only one year of starting at Oklahoma, but he does have a good skill set to replace Burks. With the unproven nature of Bolton and Summers, it would not surprise me if Brian Gutekunst made a move for another middle linebacker.
I know there will be some people bemoaning the Packers getting injured again. It happens to everyone. Even though you may feel like the Packers are different, they’re really like every other team. Injuries are part of the sport, it is always frustrating when they happen.
