PackCap: Packers Woeful Again on West Coast
Earlier today, it bothered me that I never wrote a preview for Green Bay-San Francisco. After the ass-kicking that the 49ers gave Green Bay, I’m happy I didn’t. Because I would have been heavy on the Packers explaining why I felt like the 49ers were frauds. It would turn out that I am the fraud instead of believing too much in the Packers. They suffer an embarrassing loss in San Francisco losing 37-8 last night. This is not a pretty one for the Packers. Getting smacked in the mouth like that in front of a national audience begs for a lot of questions about this team.
Player of the Game: Za’Darius Smith – One guy that played nicely in the game was Za’Darius Smith. He showed out tonight off the edge with 1.5 sacks. Smith found himself in Jimmy Garrappolo’s kitchen often. He played great off the edge taking advantage of the backup left tackle for the San Francisco 49ers. Good to see Smith still have a good game amid the blowout.
Honorable Mention: George Kittle – I don’t usually give an award out to a non-Packer, but with a shit performance, we have to shake it up. George Kittle gets the honor as he took over this game. He had eight catches for 128 yards with a touchdown. He looked like a beast with a broken bone in his ankle. That’s incredible. Packers have been exposed by tight ends all year long, and Kittle felt like the final boss. It’s not going to get easier for Green Bay.
One Thing Matt LaFleur Needs to Figure Out – Twice in the last month, Matt LaFleur’s offense got completely bungled by a team that can rush four and drops back into coverage. Packers need to figure out how to take the top off the defenses in these situations. Not a ton of teams can do this, but the elite ones – San Francisco and New England.
Is this defense bad? – We could be at a point where we wonder ‘Oh no, we suck again!’ The defense is currently 18th in DVOA, and they’re going down from there when the new ratings come out on Tuesday. This defense has been leaking oil for the last few weeks, and it doesn’t seem like they’re making many improvements. Mike Pettine is going to need to figure some things out in the secondary because the explosive plays keep happening against Green Bay.
Next up: Green Bay heads to the other coast to play the New York Giants. The G-Men looked hapless against Chicago and could not do much offensively. Their defense isn’t good either. Saquon Barkley could be a real problem for the Packers, but Danny Dimes is a walking turnover. This should be a get right spot for the Packers.
