Packers Come Close To Nearly Stunning Steelers
Oh my god. It’s hard to believe at 10:30 tonight, I actually was trying to guide a Chris Boswell field goal wide left for the Packers to continue into overtime against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A game where Green Bay came in as a 14-point underdog to Pittsburgh showed the utmost fight to hang with one of the better teams in football all game long. Moral victories do not count especially this late in the season, but you have to feel great about Green Bay in the upcoming weeks against lesser opponents. Packers showed a ton of a heart, and a few mistakes plagued this team from one of the most special wins of the last decade.
First mistake was Mike McCarthy opting for a 57-yard field goal with Green Bay leading 21-14. Green Bay received a Ben Roethlisberger turnover, and with a bad possession, they could not turn into positive yardage after Brett Hundley took a sack on third down. McCarthy chose to kick it versus punting or trying a deep pass which did not turn out well. Pittsburgh used the short field and drove right down for the tying score. It changed the second half. You have to wonder what happens if McCarthy takes the field possession.
Second mistake happened at the very end of the game as Hundley and the offense got a chance to win this game in regulation. Things did not go well with T.J. Watt having a sack on first down (Helmet-to-helmet was missed there and should have been called). Green Bay tried a screen to see if they could pop something loose, and Jaamal Williams stepped out of bounds in a costly error. This gave the Steelers enough time to get one more drive and escape with a victory. Williams made a rookie mistake, and those are going to happen especially late in the game.
Next week is a new week, and you hope Hundley can figure out his Lambeau Field problems. Maybe, he can figure out a way to treat home games like road games. Green Bay cannot lose the remainder of the season if they want a shot at the playoffs. It’s back to the run to the table life, and while the odds are harder, I like the direction of this team better.
