Packers Make Wise Move Passing on Antonio Brown
Waking up, I do my usual thing and find myself on Twitter seeing if I missed any stories overnight. I personally fell asleep early after too many beers, so, I missed the news about Antonio Brown headed to the Buffalo Bills. By the morning, the deal was squashed and no longer one for both parties. Reports came out after saying Green Bay had no interest in Brown and would not be perusing him. That is a great thing. Brown moved himself into the Terrell Owens zone in the past few months with his bizarre social media activity and his walrus-like mustache plus the blue hair. This isn’t a man that is misunderstood, rather, it’s a man who is unhinged with no one telling him ‘no.’ That’s not a player for the Green Bay Packers.
This isn’t a blog post talking about Green Bay like they’re holier than thou. No, Packers can take on challenging players. Some fans want robots and no personalities. That’s why Jermichael Finley and the fans did not get along here during his time in Green Bay. That being said, there’s a difference from being outspoken versus unhinged. Brown is on the latter portion of that and don’t really think he is worth the risk despite the talent he possesses on the football field.
As others have pointed out, this would be a huge undertaking for Matt LaFleur in year one of being a head coach. He already has to deal with building a relationship with Aaron Rodgers then you add Brown to the mix, how is that helping anything? In addition, there are receivers available like Golden Tate, Devin Funchess and others that are not going to be as expensive as Brown will be for Green Bay. It makes absolutely no sense for Green Bay to do any sort of deal for Brown especially if Pittsburgh wants a first round pick.
I know fans will clamor about the need of talent and the Packers do not take any risks. This is not a ‘one-year prove it or lose it’ deal. It’s a massive contract that will be stuck to you like an anvil even if Brown’s play suffers in the process. Good on Brian Gutekunst for not going down this path.
