Packers Needed To Call Jared Veldheer Yesterday
Green Bay Packers have been nipped by the injury bug right before the season is set to begin. Kamal Martin will not be with the team for the next six to eight weeks with a knee injury. But the bigger immediate concern is that Billy Turner could miss Game 1 against Minnesota with a knee injury. From what you read, Turner seemed to be the right tackle for the team with Lane Taylor playing right guard. Ricky Wagner could fill in for Turner at right tackle, but he is bothered by an elbow injury. Green Bay could start the year at right tackle with Alex Light which would make more nervous than doom and gloomer walking down Brady Street on Saturday night. They need to call Jared Veldheer.
If you recall, the Packers wisely picked up Veldheer midway through the season. He was playing for the Patriots, decided to retire for a bit then came back which led to his release. Green Bay picked him up. It paid off in a big way when Bryan Bulaga fell sick in January with the flu and Veldheer had to step in against Seattle in a playoff game. He did a great job. Veldheer used eyes and the phone emoji when beat writers wondered the same thing I’m doing a few weeks ago.
My only reasoning on why this hasn’t happened yet is Green Bay evaluating cut day. They might plan to bring him back during the day on Saturday before they’re making the final cuts to the roster. Or after the cuts are made then maybe bringing him back to the mix. Maybe that’s naive of me to think they’re going to bring him back, but is Green Bay really going to trot out Light against that Minnesota Vikings pass rush? Light showed some flashes, but most of the time he was in the ‘Don Barclay Hall of Fame’ of bad lineman. My confidence level with him is not high.
Make the call, Gutey!
