Packers Should Make a Phone Call About Stephon Gilmore
Green Bay Packers have yet to make a splash in free agency. That’s okay. The Packers are dealing with a funky cap in the first place, and none of the deals were standout moves. Maybe Davin Tombilson, but that’s it because it was a good value. Most of the deals have been overpaid thus far. One of the teams that is doling out the cash is the New England Patriots. The way they’re throwing around money it looks like James Harden at the strip club. They signed Jalen Mills to a four-year deal which made everyone wonder if Stephon Gilmore will be traded in the coming days. If that’s the case, let’s hope it is too the Green Bay Packers.
Gilmore is one of the best corners in football. He won Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. If the Packers add him, they’re going to be impossible to beat on the edges with him and Jaire Alexander, a potential Defensive Player of the Year, in his own right. It is rare for a team to have two shutdown corners. But that’s exactly what the Packers would have with Gilmore. It would address the need for a cornerback, and Green Bay could still draft one early. This is Gilmore’s last year of a deal, so, he will likely move on the following year.
Some might say ‘Well he’s a rental.’ Guess what, Tampa had a lot of rentals and flyers that were talented and it led to a Super Bowl. Gilmore is a one-year deal worth seven million dollars. That’s absolutely nothing. What New England might want in return will be interesting to see. It’s a big chip, but they do not have a leg to stand. The Packers do not typically overpay, so, I cannot see them doing something dumb like giving a second or a third for a rental player. My guess is the picks would be middle-round for a guy of Gilmore’s caliber.
We’ll see if Green Bay can make some sort of move with Gilmore in the coming days. As always with this kind of thing, don’t end up on a rival.
