Will the Packers Trade for Khalil Mack?
Green Bay lacked a pass-rush last season. They did not have one due to the resources not being there and Green Bay being too predictable. They could potentially be in the mix for one of the best pass-rushers in football, Khalil Mack. Packers have what it takes to bring Mack into Green Bay. The Pro Bowl linebacker is on the trading block due to being at odds with Jon Gruden and management due to a desire of a long-term deal. Green Bay has what it takes to trade for Mack, but will they pull the trigger?
This would be a very un-Green Bay move, let’s not get that mistaken. Packers aren’t that team to go after flashy pieces, but with the extra first round pick, it does give them some flexibility. It appears that Mack and management are at odds, and he does not seem interested in a long-term deal. Mack could easily replace Clay Matthews from a contract perspective as Matthews comes off the books next year. Packers have the money to pay Mack now if he wants a long-term deal done before the season.
Mack is one of the premier players in the sport. He’s had three straight years of double-digit sacks. He has not missed a game for his entire career which is huge considering the injury issues that plague Nick Perry and Matthews on a regular basis. Mack is a complete monster that gets to quarterbacks on a regular basis. He would wreck havoc for the team and be one of the leaders on defensive starting day 1 in Green Bay. He’s an exciting talent that’s worth the price of what it would take to bring him to Green Bay.
Even if Mack does not become a Packer, it could be great leverage for a guy like Earl Thomas whose also on the trading block. Will one of the teams cave and get a second round pick due to wanting to get that player moved before the season? It’s unsure, but what’s great about the Packers at this moment is we have no idea how Brian Gutekunst would handle a potential preseason deal plus the thought isn’t as wild as it once was with Ted Thompson. Personally, I like Mack more than Thomas given the age and durability.
