PGATourCap: Webb Simpson’s Lights Up The Back Nine & Notches a W

Webb Simpson is an underrated great golfer. He is not flashy. He does not hit long. But the dude is solid to a great golfer. Simpson has a major under his belt and should be considered a contender for the three majors this season. Simpson led after Round 2 and Round 3 but with a torrid start from a variety of golfers, Simpson lost his lead. But he bounced back in a big way on the back-nine. He finished with a 30 on the back-nine to get his second victory of the season.
Rate This Tournament: 9.5/10 – I didn’t want to go back-to-back 10’s but this thing kicked ass. The leaderboard on Sunday was not what it could have been, but dammit, it was fun. Tyrell Hatton, Abraham Ancer, Simpson, and a few others were all going at it. Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas going low was a ton of fucking fun too. Also, the fact they were able to fit in this tournament with a two-hour and 45-minute delay is truly impressive.
One Golfer, I Liked: Abraham Ancer – This dude is going to be good. He is breaking through. Would I bet him next week? Absolutely Not. He is going to be very chalky next week. But Ancer has a shot to be a damn good golfer. He isn’t the longest golfer in the game, but Ancer is such a ball-striker. If the putter worked a little better for him today, we’re talking about his first major victory.
One Golfer to Watch: Brooks Koepka – Here we go. Brooks Koepka could be starting to heat up. There is a notion that Koepka doesn’t give a shit out there if it’s not a major, and that’s not true. Consider this about him for next week and beyond. Koepka is currently not in the FedEx Cup Playoffs at all. He is the top golfer for the Ryder Cup though. He is a favorite for the Travelers next week.
One Golfer I Didn’t Like: Last week’s competitors – This might be something to watch for next week (Yes, I realize this contradicts my point about Koepka). Gary Woodland, Xander Schauffle, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa all finished towards the bottom this week. Patrick Reed and Sungjae Im were cut. The only one that responded back-to-back is Daniel Berger.
Next week: The PGA Tour heads to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. This is a Bubba Watson track. Watson has won this tournament three times and a runner up in another one. Watson tends to perform well at certain courses. Jordan Spieth has won here too and Berger is worth consideration too. Most of the same guys are here for another week plus Patrick Cantlay and Paul Casey return to the mix.
Charlie.
