See Ya Never, Ron Zook
The Office is such a cliche show to use when looking for an example to explain something that I almost think it’s too basic to bring it up as an analogy. Yet, I feel it’s the perfect one for Ron Zook and the Green Bay Packers. Everyone is singing the ‘Goodbye Toby‘ song in Wisconsin as new Packers coach Matt LaFleur informed Zook that he will not come back next year. This surprises absolutely no one considering how pitiful the Packers were on Special Teams this year.
Zook should be grateful that he didn’t get the axe earlier on in the year. I wonder what took the Packers so long to make the move on him. Did Joe Philbin have a thing about firing people, so, Zook stayed on, even though, he was awful? I’ve seen some bad coaches in my day, but Zook had everything going for him this season. Packers made mistakes on all facets of special teams. There isn’t one group in that Special Teams unit where you’re like ‘Oh they’re not bad.’ All of them had a fuck up at one point of the season. Some worse than others, but Green Bay’s special teams were a disaster.
Hopefully, this changes under LaFleur, and they can finetune the things that have been wrong with them for the last year. I realize some of the special teams issues are depth-related, but still, there were way too many mental errors by different units on special teams to use that as the ultimate excuse.
