SnoTap’s Guide for a World Cup Team
The World Cup begins later this week. The juice is not what it was four years ago. It has much to do with the United States not being there. The disappointment is absolutely real. I’m not sure what the ratings are going to look like for the tournament. I still feel there are many, many people who are fired up for this to begin later this week and be on for the next month. I usually get into international soccer, and let’s pick some of the teams I’ll either be rooting for or have some interest in.
1. Germany – This is a pretty easy one. I’m German thus I like to cheer for Germany when I get a chance. From what I read, this isn’t as talented as a German squad we’ve seen in the past few World Cups yet they’re one of the few that we’ll get some Milwaukee appeal behind.
2. Argentina/Portugal – In a weird way, I feel this is the Duke/North Carolina of soccer. It feels to me like you’re either a Ronaldo or Messi fan, not both. Therefore, you have to choose their international side. Personally, I lean Argentina, but it’s real close because I’m an outsider on the look-in.
3. Peru/Iceland – If you’re looking for the feel good story of the World Cup, here’s the sexy and realistic pick. Peru is on a complete heater heading into the World Cup, and it’s an emotional journey to get there. It’s a fantastic story/team. Iceland has a ton of hype around him to get people into the World Cup, but their chances of making to the knockout rounds are slim.
4. Mexico – The big question here for many people is do you cheer for Mexico? There will be many, many people who will be doing it supporting their Mexican heritage. Why not join in some may say? I can’t do it. I’m not even a big soccer fan, but Mexico is the United States’ rival. You don’t cheer for a rival team. Sure, it might be fun enjoy the game with your Mexican brethren yet I’m not going to join ya.
Who are you rooting for, let me know?
