SnoTapWI 2019 Packers Grades: Tight End
Green Bay’s tight end position is an interesting one. Is it good? Not entirely. Is there some promise with the group? Yes, actually that’s true. There were four tight ends for the Packers this season. None of them was a true impact player this year. But I weirdly think they have two of the most important players for the Packers locker room. Mercedes Lewis and Jimmy Graham are both key leaders in the locker room. Graham is likely on the outs whether it’s release and retirement yet he added a lot inside the walls of Lambeau.
Mercedes Lewis – GRADE: B
He is a hard one to grade because Lewis doesn’t have the stats. But Lewis is a helluva blocker plus a great locker room guy. Lewis is known by the team as ‘Big Dog.’ I hope he comes back next year. It is important to have guys like this in the locker room. Lewis still has a little bit more left in the tank. He did have a much better season in 2019 compared to 2018 when Mike McCarthy had zero idea how to scheme tight ends.
Jace Sternberger – GRADE: B-
HEAR ME OUT! The guy didn’t do much last season at all. But this guy is going to have such a good season in 2020. Sternberger did a great job filling in for Danny Vitale in an H-Back role during the playoffs. And the touchdown catch he had was one of the better plays by a receiver not named Davante Adams all season. Sternberger is my guy for next season, therefore, I’m getting ahead of the hype. Join me on Jace Island, friends.
Jimmy Graham – GRADE: C
What a disappointing year for Graham. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst’s worst move has been signing Graham to a three-year deal. We all loved it at the time, but I don’t think we realized he would be a statue. Graham could not move the way he used to. Also, McCarthy doesn’t know how to use a tight end if it hit him in the ass. Matt LaFleur’s system is tight end-focused but Graham could never take advantage of that. He had the second-worst year of his career.
Robert Tonyan – GRADE: D
I like Big Bob, but there’s nothing here to work off for me. Tonyan didn’t do much this season. I’d assume that Tonyan isn’t back next season. They have four tight ends right now, and with the emergence of Sternberger, I’m not sure if Tonyan will have a role with the team.
