The Axe Stays In Madison As Badgers Win An Overtime Thriller
Wisconsin Badgers had their Super Bowl on Saturday evening. They were playing Minnesota for Paul Bunyan’s Axe in the middle of December. Wisconsin-Minnesota got their game canceled in late November. These two teams still wanted to play each other. I didn’t blame either one of these teams for wanting to play last week. Wisconsin knew that if they win this game, they will at least have that. Yes, this season sucked because of COVID and losing some games you shouldn’t have. But beating Minnesota is at least there. And it happened. They won in overtime, 20-17 beating Minnesota.
Player of the Game: Garrett Groshek – What a game from the Badgers’ senior running back. Groshek hasn’t had the year that he might have thought heading into this one. But Groshek dominated this game in the backfield. He had 154 yards with 24 carries averaging about six per carry. He took advantage of the porous Minnesota defense. Without Nakita Watson or Jalen Berger, Groshek showed he can be the featured back.
Honorable Mention: Chase Wolf – We have no idea if Graham Mertz got hurt or not. He didn’t have his pads on in the second half. Wolf came into the game and did his job. He managed the game perfectly. Wolf found Jack Dunn to retake the lead against Minnesota. We’ll see if they ride with Wolf for the bowl game.
What went right: Wisconsin kept their composure – Badgers did not get nervous. This game could have easily gone the other way to Minnesota. But that didn’t happen. They did just enough to win this football game. And while that could sound critical, it isn’t considering what we saw from Wisconsin this season. Badgers managed this game nicely and made sure that they didn’t blow this one.
Next up: Wisconsin gets ready for their bowl game as they’re taking on Wake Forest. This is an interesting matchup. Wake went a month before playing because of COVID stuff. But their defense cannot stop anything. We’ll see what Wisconsin has in store in the bowl game. They’ve been very successful under Paul Chryst in this spot.
