The Return of Tailgating Is a Good Sign For Everyone, Not Just the Brewers
Tailgating is back at American Family Field. It took one series then the tailgating returned to the stadium. Was this likely a virtual signal move or a move to prevent massive Opening Day ragers? Probably a combination of the two. But tailgating is back with the Brewers. It’s a huge part of the culture around Milwaukee, and why some people go to baseball games. Now, of course, the weather is going to brutal next week when Milwaukee takes on Chicago then Pittsburgh, yet people can still tailgate. That is a good sign forward for Milwaukee and other teams around the state.
As we get out of this pandemic, things need to start normalizing when they can. Tailgating is definitely one of those things. The Brewers have enough space in their ballpark to have fans properly spread out. Although what we know about COVID-19 is the spread is much less likely to happen outdoors. Therefore when the Brewers get more fans approved, the option to tailgate still should be easy to do without any problems. Some might take umbrage, but my recommendation there would just go inside if it bothers you.
The Brewers could provide a blueprint that the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers can follow in the fall. Roger Goodell seems to believe that the NFL will have full stadiums. And if that’s the case, tailgating at and around Lambeau will come with it. It will be interesting to see if Green Bay tries to control the tailgating that happens outside of their parking lots. Same for Wisconsin. No word from the Big Ten on how many fans, but the expectation is they will have some. The tailgate scene at Madison is far different than Green Bay, so, the regulation of it might be difficult.
More and more news like this makes me yearn that summer will be mostly normal. Maybe masks are still a thing until the fall or whenever the herd immunity threshold hits. And sure, there will be some scares. It’s not a perfect science where every week things will continuously get better. But it’s encouraging that things are headed in the right direction.
