Baseball’s Fate Gets Decided This Week, Hold On Tight

Deadlines spurn action. That’s what I’ve been told in the past. From my experience, that’s mostly true. When someone is on deadline, they tend to make sure things get completed promptly. Deadlines are needed for most people in life because if they do not have one, nothing gets done. Major League Baseball has a deadline this week. At that time, baseball will decide if they’re having a season or not. Things look dire right now, but as noted, deadlines lead to deals getting done.
Right now, things seem to be at a standstill. I refuse to believe that will be the case in a couple of days. Baseball needs to figure this out. They can ill afford to miss out on a season. Many people miss baseball. And those who are casual fans will likely not come back. There are enough other sports out there for people to latch on somewhere else. The consequences of not playing this year are absolutely catastrophic. But it doesn’t seem like anyone cares which is the most disappointing thing of it all.
My feelings have migrated more towards the players than the owners in the last couple of weeks yet still I think both parties suck. They had a chance to have baseball as the only main attraction. If baseball made waves as it seemed in the early part of COVID-19, they could have owned two full months to themselves before basketball, hockey, and others got started again. Baseball squandered a golden opportunity, and they do not seem to give a fucking shit. What’s more important is trying to figure out how not to set a precedent for their new CBA. These idiots understand that this is entirely different than any other season of baseball, right?
Will a deal get done? Maybe. The worst-case scenario might be Rob Manfred and the owners playing with replacement players. No one wants that. While some Triple-A and Double-A guys will love that idea of being a big leaguer, it waters down the sport entirely. Would I watch it? Probably. But it would be hard to care about as much as we all do with big leagues.
Let’s see if deadlines can work and baseball gets a 70-game possibly.
Charlie.
