College Hoops Has Lost Its Luster
You may have noticed the lack of college hoops coverage in the last week. Some of that is due to me being busy, and many stories related to Wisconsin sports breaking at the same time. The other part of it is the fact that college hoops snuck up on me, and I didn’t seem to care to dive completely in. For the first time in my life, the sport took a backseat, hence why you haven’t seen me talk about Marquette and Wisconsin. When driving yesterday, I asked myself why this happened?
The first reason could be your Milwaukee Bucks and the NBA in general. I’m watching more NBA and consuming NBA content more than I have ever have before. I cared about the league before, but I’m truly invested in almost every game that Milwaukee plays plus the marquee games during the week such as Golden State-Boston on Thursday night. It’s must-see television almost every night. College basketball doesn’t provide that same sort of excitement. The game is slow, and the refs are terrible which turns the product into complete mush. It also doesn’t help the teams’ rosters are a revolving door from year-to-year.
College game feels broken to me, and maybe that’s the reason I’ve kept my distance. I don’t really care about the scandals at Louisville, but it feels like there’s something every year like that with basketball. Also, March Madness is still the best and some of the most fun we have as sports fans for three weeks, yet the process to get there doesn’t really drive excitement especially the first two months of the season. There are some major games worth talking about it, but it’s usually teams getting fat on cupcakes.
This all being said, I’ll still cover Marquette and Wisconsin games. I peeked both teams this weekend and saw both could have their struggles in different parts of the game. For the Golden Eagles, their perimeter defense will drive me up the wall this season, and for Wisconsin, who is going to be ‘the man’ this year. We’ll get a better look at both teams this week as they participate in the Gavitt Games with Marquette playing Purdue tonight, and Wisconsin taking on Xavier on Thursday.
College hoops may have lost me, but I’m willing to give it a second chance.
