MubbCap: Marquette Bounces Back in Blowout Fashion

Marquette needed a ‘get-right’ game. With all of the things that surrounded the team in the last week after three poor games in the Big East, Golden Eagles needed a victory. Even if they grinded one out against Georgetown, I don’t think many people would be satisfied. Hoyas are playing hurt right now with two of their starters out and only seven scholarship players. They were ripe for an ass-kicking. Marquette delivered that and then some winning 92-73 sweeping the Hoyas this season. This is the third time in the last four years that the Golde Eagles have swept the Hoyas.
Player of the Game: Markus Howard – Goodness gracious, Markus Howard. He had one of his best games of his career last night. Howard heard the chirps about him being a bad passer. He finished the game with seven assists finding open man after open man. Howard added 30 points and five rebounds as well. He only missed six shots all game going 10-for-16. If Howard can play this way in March, Marquette can go very far as a team. Part of the reason he played so well last night is everyone around him got going early and he didn’t feel the need to do everything.
Honorable Mention: Jamal Cain – What a night for the junior forward. He came off the bench and scored 15 points with three 3-pointers. He is an energy guy that Marquette feeds off regularly. That happened again last night as the Golden Eagles began to extend their lead against the Hoyas. Cain is a guy that will be great next season. He has all the makings of taking a Sacar Anim-like leap next year.
One Thing I Liked: Marquette got off to a quick start and never looked back – Golden Eagles have been struggling to start fast in a majority of their recent games. That didn’t happen on Wednesday. Marquette found themselves on a 10-4 run to start the game and never gave back the lead. This needs to happen more often. Not being out to a large lead, rather, making baskets early and often.
One Thing I Didn’t Like: Could Patrick Ewing fucking chill? – What the hell was Patrick Ewing doing late in this game? He decided to press until the final whistle of the game. At some point, you have to admit that this one is over and your team lost the game. Ewing could not comprehend that and decided to press his ass off for no real reason.
Next up: Here we go. Seton Hall-Marquette in Milwaukee. Markus Howard versus Myles Powell Round II. The crowd is a sellout and will be a rowdy one. I worry that Howard might try to do too much in this game. The emotions of this one could get the best of him. Marquette will need to stop their two-point scoring and find opportunities to get quick baskets. If Hall slows this one down, they have the advantage with their size if it’s a half-court game.
