On Thursday, the Los Angeles Chargers picked up Mike Williams’ fifth year of his contract. It is assumed that Williams will likely get a big deal from the Chargers next year. Longtime Chargers receiver Keenan Allen is in the final year of his deal. There are zero rumors that Chargers are making Allen available, but if you put the pieces together, Chargers may want to move on from him knowing that he will likely not return to the team next year. Allen would be a dynamic piece for the Packers to add, and all of the negativity about the NFL Draft will wash away. Could Brian Gutekunst swing this deal? Maybe.

Trying to determine the value of Allen is difficult. He is one of the best receivers in football. Perhaps, one of the most underrated receivers in the game. He is making 10.75 million next year. If you’re familiar with Green Bay’s cap situation, they do not have a ton of room. They would have to include a player in a trade to ensure they’re not completely screwing their cap situation. Right now, they’re at 11.06 million, therefore, Allen can be available without moving players. Yet in order to get this done, this will probably be done with trading a player too.

Who would that player be? Lane Taylor is the easy answer. Chargers’ offensive line is reshaped with Trai Turner and Bryan Bulaga both added to the roster. They’re weak at the left guard position, although Forrest Lamp is a draft pick from last year at guard. Taylor is making 4.1 million next year. Jamaal Williams could be another option, but he only makes two million plus the Chargers drafted a running back early as the Packers did. Green Bay will likely need to include a Day 2 pick. That could be too much for a guy in his final year.

As we talked about earlier this week, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst does not overpay for receivers. He isn’t going to sell the farm for a year of Allen. But Allen would be better than any of the guys that he previously tried to trade for.
