PGA TourCap: Dustin Johnson Roars To His First Victory of the Season

Dustin Johnson might be underappreciated in the game of golf. Johnson has only won one major, so, he carries that distinction with him. Johnson should likely have two or three by this time, but there is still a chance for more. Johnson won on Sunday capturing the Travelers Championship for the first time ever. This is his 13th straight season with one victory. And the 21st win of his career. Johnson held off Kevin Streelman to take home the title and vault himself in the FedEx Cup rankings.
Rate the tournament: 8/10 – This was exciting on the final day, but CBS/Golf Channel completely bungled the Saturday coverage. With rain in the forecast, the tournament bumped up everything to Saturday morning. Golf Channel showed two hours of coverage then ducked out and waited for a tape-delayed version. That’s problem number one. CBS had NWSL Challenge Cup before the Travelers so they couldn’t show third-round action early, but could they have considered CBS Sports Network? It sucked to have DJ’s 61 on a delay.
One golfer I liked: Will Gordon – How about this? So given the new rules this season with the pandemic, Gordon qualifies for the rest of the season with an unlimited amount of sponsor invites. If Gordon finishes inside the top 125 of FedEx points, he will get his card for next season. Gordon is a fun golfer to watch. He is a definition of a bomber and someone we can expect to make some noise in the future.
One golfer I didn’t like: Phil Mickelson – This sucks for Phil, but it’s the reality of his career at this point. He is too old to put together four good rounds of golf. He started red hot with 64 and 63 then he had two 71s the rest of the way. Mickelson seems like a golfer who might be better suited for a U.S. Open where even might win the tournament. You cannot expect four good rounds out of Mickelson any longer.
Next up: Golfers head to Michigan with new COVID-19 protocols. PGA learned from some of their mistakes in the first three weeks of doing things. Golf deserves credit for pushing forward after multiple withdraws and positive tests. The field for The Rocket Mortage Classic features Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, and a few others. We’ll see if golf will avoid their COVID-19 problems next week.
