Steve Wojciechowski Gives Election Day To Allow Players To Vote

Marquette Golden Eagles head coach Steve Wojciechowski heard people criticize him all last season. In a lot of ways, it was just. There were things wrong with the team and yes, Wojo should be on the hot seat. That said, he used his platform of Instagram very well over the past few months to promote positive change. He had a great post sharing all of the Marquette players on a boat last summer and gave a long, passionate caption about ‘his guys.’ Yesterday, Wojciechowski announced that Marquette will be off Election Day so players have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming 2020 election.
It is a great gesture by Marquette and one that others are doing across the country. This started by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and it’s a great cause. The voting numbers for kids 18-24 are very scary. They’re low and do not have the impact that we see in some other age groups. Every year, people try to get out the vote for young kids and it doesn’t seem to connect. Maybe this is the voting year where that changes. College basketball teams are trying to do their part to change that narrative. No word on if the other Wisconsin D1 Basketball schools are doing something similar
