What the Brewers’ Interest in Jackie Bradley Jr. Could Mean

Milwaukee Brewers are not done with free agency. They’re looking for different options to help improve their baseball team. Not exactly at one position either. Brewers looked in at Trevor Rosenthal before he signed with the Oakland Athletics. Now, they’re apparently in on Jackie Bradley Jr. Milwaukee has a host of outfielders, so, it’s surprising that they want Bradley Jr. Here’s what this could mean for the Brewers as they try to improve their roster.
1. Ryan Braun does not seem like he’s coming back: We heard the story a few weeks ago that Braun isn’t ready to return. It seems like that is still the case. Whether it’s an opt-out or a retirement, Brewers aren’t preparing to have Braun this season. It sucks but it is what it is. I wonder if fans come back in full, would Braun want to return then for one final ride?
2. Brewers would make a move to put Garcia at first base – Right now, it seems like the Brewers are set in the outfield. Avisail Garica in right, Lorenzo Cain in center, and Christian Yelich in left field. If you add Bradley Jr to the mix, how does that change things? Well, maybe the move is to have Garcia play more at first base to free up right field for either Bradley Jr. or Cain. What does that do for Keston Hiura and Dan Vogelbach’s at-bats, I’m not sure. There would be a cascading effect for sure.
3. Brewers don’t like what they have in their fourth outfielder – Let’s be clear JBJ isn’t a fourth outfielder, but more so, this means that the Brewers are left cold by their other potential options. Tyrone Taylor, Corey Ray, Derek Fisher, Billy McKinney are those options. Bradley Jr. is supremely better than any of those guys.
If he signs elsewhere, that’s understandable. I guess that the other places will give him a more clear-cut role. That is what happened with Rosenthal who got the guarantee from Oakland that he could be closing games. Unsure if that’s what JBJ wants or needs, but if it is, the Brewers are likely out of the running.
